Bug List

  1. Getting holes in my socks and having to buy new pairs all the time.
WHY: I tend to buy cheap socks, I like to walk around the house with socks on, and I only change socks every 2-3 days.
  2. Running in to spider webs at night while walking outside.
WHY: I have a fear of spiders and the feeling of their web on my face, and they are nearly impossible to see at night without a light.
  3. Sunscreen running into my eyes when my face starts to sweat, even if the sunscreen is supposedly water resistant.
WHY: Sunscreens may be water proof but sweat can still catch some of the sunscreen causing it to get in your eyes and sting.
  4. While driving, being stuck behind someone whose texting or talking on the phone.
WHY: Texting while driving is only a secondary offense in Florida, and so people can not be stopped by police unless they have another primary reason to be pulled over.
  5. Lizards and bugs coming into the house when I open the door.
WHY: Bugs are attracted to the light and I have no way to stop them from getting in when I open the door.
  6. Being dependent on internet service providers to always provide internet, and when they don't and I lose important data.
WHY: There is no backup in place to maintain an internet connection when the service provider fails to do so.
  7. Wanting to try a newly released video game to see if its worth buying, but not always having the ability to do so.
WHY: Lots of video games don't have ways for people to test the game before buying it, and distribution platforms such as Steam have very restrictive refund policies.
  8. Not having cell phone service inside my house.
WHY: My house has a metal roof which interferes with cell phone signals, meaning I have to be connected to wifi to use most of the features on my phone without having to go outside.
  9. Terribly small wifi radius unless you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars.
WHY: Internet service companies don't provide cheap access to a stronger and larger wifi signal, forcing people to spend more money.
  10. The diagnostic and troubleshoot tools for computer programs don't usually help that much and force me to find an alternative answer to a computer problem.
WHY: The tools cannot locate the problem unless it is an internal problem within the computer itself. The technology to troubleshoot all possible sources of the problem is not existent.
  11. Going to an appointment at any doctor, waiting for an hour or more, and then going in for only 10 minutes.
WHY: Some doctors are actually busy, but when a patient has an appointment, they should be ready to take them in at the specific time. This could happen because of poor planning by the doctor or they are too overwhelmed with patients.
  12. Searching a show to watch it online, and the first link spoils the entire episode I'm about to watch.
WHY: Almost all shows are available online nowadays, but if you don't watch it as soon as its out, the second you search it there will be news and opinions spoiling the major parts of the episode. People are allowed to title their search with spoilers, and while it is good for catching peoples attention, it also can ruin an episode of a show for someone.
  13. Urine on the toilet in men's public bathrooms.
WHY: Happens because most guys will not care to wipe the seat if toilet water or urine splashes onto it. There is no one to say to enforce a clean it if its yours rule, and the next people to use it wont clean it because who wants to clean other guys urine.
  14. Some textbooks cost way too much money and may not even be used in the class.
WHY: Textbook companies have so much control over students because they are usually the sole providers of the texts needed for a class. They also can charge whatever they like and tend to charge more for classes in high demand.
  15. Textbooks depreciate after their bought extremely quickly, and you can trade them in for maybe half of what you payed.
WHY: Textbook companies overprice many books for what they cost to produce, and retailers that do take book returns need to make a profit so they cant provide student much money back.
  16. Not being able to lie down while wearing a seat belt on long road trips.
WHY: In most cars when you try to lie down across the back seat while wearing a seat belt, the belt strangles you and the little lock thing stabs you in the chest, making it impossible to sleep comfortably.
  17. All sorts of bugs coming in to my dorm from outside.
WHY: The gap under the door is large enough for many small creatures to fit through, dorm room is on the bottom floor, and its the closest to the dumpster.
  18. Wet socks.
WHY: Socks are very absorbent and most shoes have holes in them, so when you step in a puddle, or it is raining, your socks get wet and then take a long time to dry.
  19. Waking up in the morning and realizing I forgot to charge my phone.
WHY: Forgetting to plug my phone in before lying down, and falling asleep before I have a chance to remember.
  20. Going somewhere to buy something and leaving to then realize you forgot to buy what you went for.
WHY: Going into a store and seeing all these things you want to buy but aren't there to buy, getting distracted, and simply forgetting what you went there for in the first place.

Coming up with this list was extremely difficult, because I am not use to looking at the world from such a perspective, and not a lot actually bugs me. Also most things that I thought of already have solutions or are simply unsolvable. It did give me a glimpse towards understanding the way entrepreneurs think about the world.

  1. Good Afternoon Owen,

We do not really have the same bugs but that is ok. After reading your blog I thought well I could see how some of those things would bug someone. For example, I don’t play video games so I would never think that not being able to test a video game out would bug someone. On a side note I was in the military and when we would go on long hikes we would always have to stop multiple times to change our socks, I completely understand why wet socks bother you.

    Thanks for the read

  2. Owen,

I find it interesting that my list of bugs is almost completely different from your list. As i was reading your list, I realized that there was a lot of things on it that would bug me as well, however I never thought to put them on my list. For example, going to a store and forgetting to buy what your came in for. I tend to always forget my grocery list when I go to the store and I almost always miss one of two things.

  3. Owen,

I really appreciate the structure of your bug list. It is very easy to read and I really appreciate this fact. Many of the bugs you listed were interesting to me because I had never thought of them, but they do apply to me as well. For example, lying down in the car with a seatbelt on. This has bugged me on many a road trip but I didn't think about it for the list. I agree that this assignment gave a good glimpse at the way entrepreneurs think which I really appreciated.

    Thanks for sharing, Zach L.

  4. Owen,

You had a bunch of great bugs on your list. I can see how these would be annoying and hard to find solutions too. For example, when you talked about the bugs coming in when you opened the door because of the light it would be hard to find a solution to that problem. Also, walking into spider webs at night is the worst because like you said you can’t see it coming. Your reflection is close to mine too I found this task a little difficult because it is not the way we usually look at these scenarios.
